Ornamental Grasses

Ornamental grasses, which can handle both drought and wet conditions, are enjoying a burst of increased popularity as accent plants, ground covers, screens, and border edgings. Many ornamental grasses produce attractive flowers that will gracefully sway with the wind and provide textural interest to your garden.

Grasses can be either clump-forming or rhizome-forming "running" grass. The clump-forming grasses will grow in very nice, neat mounds or clumps that mix very well with other perennials and will not become invasive. While rhizome-forming grasses spread by underground stems and make excellent ground covers, erosion control plants, and dense cover plantings that resist the invasion of weeds, they can become very aggressive and invasive! Their place may not be in a well-tended perennial border. Before selecting an ornamental grass be sure to understand how it grows so you won't be planting a future problem. The University of Illinois Extension has created a Web site titled " Ornamental Grasses" where homeowners can learn about the various types of ornamental grasses and their maintenance requirements. But the best way to make wise choices is to check with the garden professionals at Reds. We'll help you select the best ornamental grass for your purpose and design, resulting in a garden that is both aesthetic and functional.

Our Plant List includes the scientific (Latin) names of ornamental grasses we commonly carry. Click the name of each plant for a listing of varieties within each genus. While these plants will all be available at some point, we cannot guarantee that they will be in stock on any given day. So if you're looking for something specific, please call ahead or email us for current availability.
